This forum is about a guitar playing technique where strings are tapped against frets to activate sound. This particular technique has been given a variety of names, from "tapping" to "touchstyle." Although there is much contention about the name, "touchstyle," I am going to use it freely as part of my conversation on this forum. It is now a term which has wide and universal usage. As a result, I will use both the terms "touchstyle" and "tapping" throughout my discussions. I think the this unique and imaginative style of playing a fretboard is large and expansive enough to embrace the terms "touchstyle" and "tapping." At various times, when the flow and nuance is a certain way, the term "touchstyle" seems to be appropriate. And when the energy and nuance flows another way, the word "tapping" seems to be the correct application. How many different places can one choose to play a middle C on a fretboard, each being the same note, but with a different essence? I will write more about the fascinating history of this term at a later time. Don

IMHO, I am just not fond of the sound or connotations of the word "tapping".
Touchstyle is much more seductive ‘touch’ is a good word, ‘style’ is a good word.
Touchstyle is also shorter than two handed tapping or fretboard tapping instrument and easier to relate.
Touchstyle Guitar.
Two-Handed Tapping Instrument.
Fretboard Tapping Instrument.
Which would you rather show off to your friends, family or new love interests? Your new touchstyle guitar, or your fretboard tapping instrument?

"Touchstyle" was coined by my late BFF Frank Jolliffe, it's clearly a better description of my method of playing than "Two Handed Tapping", I do more than Tap.

Glenn: Very interesting! Yes! I believe Frank Joliffe was an important part of this whole musical genre and did more than he is given credit for. I am absolutely fascinated with Frank and his history and impact in the world of "touchstyle." I have started to compile as much information as I can find in order to write an article on the man. I've just recently ordered the Frank Joliffe Songbook from Daniel Schell in Belgium. It arrived yesterday and I haven't opened the package yet. I'm waiting to get my video gear set up so I can record the opening of the package and my first verbal commentary on a set of initial educational questions I am asking of the book. Stay tuned. If you have intimate knowledge of the man, I'll soon be begging for admittance to your memories. Don

I think "touching" is a funny description, it's pretty hard to play any instrument without touching it :-) No biggie though, good to know we're all meaning the same approach to handling strings when posting here. Defining the common terminology is good for a prosperous communication.

Per: Good to hear from you. I admire your playing and your very professional approach to the Chapman Stick. Prosperous communication is always good for growth in music. I was thinking of you and your SG-12 when I just recently started another topic.Forum/Specialized Tapping Instruments/Gustavo Santaolalla Transcribed for Tapping . As I indicate on that post, I've been transcribing some of Santaolalla's songs for touchstyle instruments. Because the songs are played in a high register, I've been playing these high up on the fretboard. I wonder how they would sound on an SG-12? Are you familiar with Santaolalla's Argentinian music? Have you ever thought of playing his work on your SG-12? Don

Technically, one can play a theremin without touching it....if someone else switches it on.
