New to stick playing, sorry for the dumb question but is it atypical to play on the open strings at all? I'm trying to arrange something and my hands keep running into each other, have to move the left hand up a string and down towards the nut, leaving choices of either playing an open string or a big position jump. Seems to work, using a pull-off, but there is a tonal difference of course. Is using open strings frowned upon?

Thanks.  I asked over on Stickist.com too, and Greg Howard actually responded, suggested baritone melody tuning to avoid the collision problem - sounds like it would work, but it's a little too soon for me to start with alternate tunings, want to wrap my head around the original first.  And thanks, I think I'll continue using an occasional open string on the bass side as needed to avoid big position jumps.
