View Full Version : Tuner recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a suitable tuner manufacturer? I'm looking for a one size fits all tuner that'll handle the thickness of a bass string without much modification. My instinct is to mix and match sperzels, but that isn't the most flexible approach since, as a newbie to tapping, I'll probably want to swap tunings quite a bit in the first while (classic stick, inverted 4ths, parallel 4ths, dual melody, etc.)

Cheers

Welcome to Tappistry, Ian.

You can use guitar tuners as long as they are made of a high quality alloy (any name brand). Look for tuners with a 16:1 or 18:1 gear ratio so it will be easier to tune the larger diameter strings. You will have to drill out the hole that the string goes through to accomodate the larger strings.

One thing I'd like to know is if anyone has used locking guitar machines with a larger string. Can you drill out the string hole ( I'm sure there's a technical name for this ) and still have the locking mechanism work?
