Phalanx... er... again...

Hello all,

I just can't make up my damned mind about this thing... The Phalanx sounds SO damned good, but it seems like I was a much better player with an inverted fifths tuning. I've been thinking I'd play with a straight fifths bass tuning and see if that makes a difference. Playability is good, but maybe not for me.

I suppose what I am saying is I am reverting to testing the waters for a trade. Warr for Warr? Warr for, er... something? Any offers or ideas on playability improvement?

I have gone back and forth between 5ths and 4ths tuned instruments. I eventually settled on 4ths tuning. I like it because I can double parts by simply doubling fingering (I am lazy).

I noticed that my hand position was different depending on the tuning I was using. When I used 5ths, my thumbs were in the center of the back of the neck because my fingers did not need as much spread to play scales.

Now that I am playing 4ths on the bass, my thumbs on each hand are closer to the edge of the neck so my fingers will cover more area (sorry Traktor!!!). Give it a try and let me know what you think.

If all else fails, you could always trade with me :D

I'm also considering hiring Kevin to make me a Krappy 12 string in inverted 5ths. I actually think they look quite nice, and the tone is not at all bad, especially for the price.

All i have is the base model Mobius Megatar but it is hard to beat for $1000 new. It is not quite a Phalanx :D If you get the Krappy, give us the scoop on how it plays and sounds. I agree they look like very nice instruments for the price.

I'd truly love to test out a Megatar, but don't think I would trade my Phalanx for a low-end model. What is your tuning currently? Any recordings?

I'm leaning toward saving for a new inverted 5ths instrument. And I'm also considering (still) throwing my hat in the "build-yer-own" ring.....

My Megatar is in the "Bass Bottom" tuning. 4ths on the bass and melody side. It suits my playing style better than 5ths. If you get a chance to try the Megatar, do it!!! They are excellent instruments for the price.
