I teach at a small university. For the last lab session, the students had to give a presentation. They had to turn in a CD with the presentation on it, so I could load it on a laptop ahead of time.

One student, along with his presentation, threw in a few MP3s...Skynyrd, Hendrix, and the 'Stones. I had to admit, they were nice to listen to while I loaded all 32 presentations onto the laptop.

So, friends, thumbs up or thumbs down? Does the student deserve an extra point or two for creative thinking? Or do I visit my wrath upon him for copyright infringement? What sayeth the jury?

PHOOEY!!!

The only points students deserve are the ones they create for themselves - not the instructor!! PHOOEY I say unto thee.

I too teach at two colleges and I will tell you - I ain't an easy Prof. Jamsire!!

Earn it - don't "sway it."

An apple is still a healthier form of gratitude. There aren't enough Al DiMeola snippets to ever warrant extra points from me!

hmph!!

Well, I'm a teacher too so this situation isn't strange to me at all...
I'm not 100% clear how your student presented these files. If they are intergrated into the presentation and add some flair to his/her presentation, by all means give him/her some credit.
However, if it has nothing to do with the subject, like an extra folder with random (but extremely cool) mp3's (And by reading your post I get this impression) then don't.

Just as jamsire puts it, 'Earn it - don't "sway it"

Good luck...

My son (college student) says, "Give him 10 points for creativity, and also dock him 10 points for copyright infringement."

My other son (also a college student) says, "Flunk him if the Skynyrd song was "Free Bird". "

Yikes, Ernie, you sound like a rough task master!!!

I sure am!

Since I teach audio engineering and studio production, etc., I'm doing my best to prevent future button pushing producers.

So - oh yeah - I'm a meeenie for sure, but only so the rest of us have a chance of enjoying music in the future.

Call me crazy. 0 points.
