There is alot of info on the web on how to do this in great detail, as well as plenty of information on the specs ( number of windings, magnet type, etc. ) of many well known pickups, so you can make an informed decision on how to impart in your pickups the characteristics you would like. <
In my own (uninformed) opinion.....it doesnt' make much sense to wind ones own pickups, if an off-the-shelf pickup will fill the bill.
HOWEVER, touchstyle instrument homebrewers often have very odd demands (unusual spacings between strings, specific or odd form-factor demands, etc). Example, where do I get two humbucking pickups, with adjustable pole pieces, for a 5-string set of strings, with a 0.35" spacing, and mounting brackets on the long dimension, not the ends? I doubt if an off-the-shelf unit like this exists, I'd have to make it myself.
So, Dan, I for one will be most interested in any and all pictures and descriptions of your process.
