Hi,
actually my tapping skills don't go far beyond Hot for Teacher, but I spend a lot of time playing 'finger style' stuff and was just wondering if any of you tappers can help me out.

This question specifically relates to a technique Tuck Andress uses. I saw him do it live last year, and I've also seen him do it in a video which I can't get hold of any more.

He does it in his version of Man in the Mirror from Reckless Precision.

It involves slapping artificial harmonics on chords with some part of one's left hand. But not just easy adjacent fret chords like the old A major shape, which can be slapped with a straight finger or thumb, but chords where the frets are all over the place.

To illustrate:

A major : x02220

Easy to slap those 2's at the 14th fret for satisfying harmonic funkiness.

Db7 : xx6464

Bloody impossible... but Tuck does things like this I'm sure.

Anyone know the trick?
The whole progression goes something like this... for the curious.
Ab7 Cm7b5+13 Db9 Eb11
Ab7 Cm7b5+13 Db9 Ddim Eb7+#9
etc

Where do you live?

Tuck Andress, I heard once upon a time, lives in the San Francisco bay area. Once upon a time, I heard, he gives lessons.

Perhaps some here know the trick or how to work it out. If not, why not ask Tuck?

Yeah, I he is very forth coming with information about how he achieves what he does... his video was very detailed and precise, and his infamous picking technique article from his website is worth a read... Unfortunately you can't get much further away from Sanfransico bay area than Melbourne Australia bay area...

Tuck does it the same way Muriel Anderson (there's a figgerstyle goddess for you) does her sweeping harmonics. That is, just smack the strings at roughly 12 frets (or 7 or 5 or whatever you're after) above either the 4th or 6th fret from your example. You'll get 2 or the 4 notes cleanly and the other 2 sympathetically.

Once you get use to that you can work on greater percision by tapping the same shape 12 frets up. Once you get that (works on easy chords like A, but also on harder chords), just do a tapped harmonic. "Just" is not the best word - makes it sound easy - but you know what I mean....
