View Full Version : ADG-10 or a 10-String Stick?

I've narrowed my search to one of those two instruments, and am having difficulty deciding between the two.
I know the ADG can be positioned to be played like a standard guitar if so desired, but can you do the same with a Stick? Also, anyone know the average wait for a used Stick direct from Stick Enterprises? I went on the waiting list for sh|ts and giggles, but having no idea when one will show up. They said it could be days, or "much longer". Jim from Warr told me an ADG would be done in 2-3 months, so that seems damn tempting.
Finally, anyone who has played both and could give a comparison would be appreciated.
Thanks!

So here is my PERSONAL opinion (as in free-speech protected in full by the United States Constitution and the laws of the State of Washington) -
You can try and play a regular STICK (a trademark used here within the realm of legally protected fair-use) as a guitar, but it wouldn't really work and would feel very uncomfortable. I've tried and it wasn't the right tool-for-the-job. The NS-Stick (a trademark used here within the realm of legally protected fair-use) would be more appropriate if you want a Chapman (a name) instrument, but the headless nature may put you off. Having played a headless bass for years in the past, I would never buy a headless anything.
You can checkout the MEGATAR (a trademark), too. I don't know what the ship time is on them.
The WARR GUITAR (another trademark) guys are great, they make excellent instruments and provide terrific service. Jim (a name) is a top-notch dude (R) and very easy to do business with. If I were you I would buy an ADG (another trademark).
You could also buy my 8-string Warr Guitar (TM) for $2500. :) You'd be jammin' this time next week!

I played the Stick from 1995 to 2002, when I switched to the ADG. First, consider that whichever one you choose, it won't be too difficult to get rid of it if it doesn't do the trick for you. I think that these instruments hold their value remarkably well.
There are a few major differences. I would say that the biggest difference is in the tone. The ADG has a passive Bartolini pickup, the Stick has something else. At least on my all-mahogany (wenge fretboard) ADG, the sound of the Bartolini is just sublime. The Stick sounds different. Not necessarily better, nor worse, but definitely different. Only you can say which one you prefer.
Another is the way the instrument hangs on you. The Stick has a neck strap and a belt hook, the ADG can be worn with a regular guitar strap, although I prefer the Slider strap. Again, it's really a question of preference, and what you're used to. For me, the ADG felt comfortable right away, but I never had any problems with the way the Stick is worn either. The ADG is probably better if you have a gig playing in a nudist colony.
I find that the different profile of the neck makes absolutely no difference to my playing. In my opinion, the two instruments play basically the same.
I never play the ADG positioned like a standard guitar. If I want to do that, I pick up a standard guitar.

wmlusk: LMAO!!! I'd love to get your Warr, but I really want a 10 string and the price is a little too much. Thanks anyway!
rockola: Thanks for the info. Choosing a touch guitar truly is a pain in the *** simply because it's impossible to get a hold of one to try out. I've tried every major music store in NY and NJ and no one has ****e. I think I'm gonna have to resort to a coin toss or something.

I was in the same place you are about 6 months ago.. It was a toss up between a Chapman Stick and an ADG.. In August of last year I attended a bassist's convention in Mobile, Alabama where a Stick was available. I tried it out and didn't like it.. Not that it was bad. It had a great sound and was very well constructed, it was just not very comfortable to me. I opted for the ADG and couldn't be happier.. The only regret I have is that I didn't opt for the second pickup near the bridge... I might contact Jim at Warr guitars and see if I can send it back to have one installed.
I don't think you'll go wrong with either one. The ADG is a great instrument and a little cheaper than the Stick (and much cheaper than the Warrs... And by "cheap" I mean "it costs less" and not "cheap" in regards to the instrument's materials or construction)
Good luck!!

I owned an ADG 10 for a fair amount of time and I never found I could play it like a standard guitar which I have played for a long, l-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-n-g time. I played a St... that belonged to an acquaintance for a number of months and I could not play it like a standard guitar at all.
I found the ADG10 was more difficult to position to play standing - which is what I prefer when I perform - it was fairly easy to position sitting. I found the ADG had the tone I preferred in comparison to the St...
FYI, I've played a Solene for quite a few years now and I vastly prefer it over either the ADG or St... but then I finally decided I was after more contrapunal ability in the guitar range rather than the extensive added lower end of the 10s.
Let me know if you have specific questions!:D

I think to find a used ADG is not easy. They don't come up often on eBay.
I strongly suggest that you contact Jim Wright at Warr Guitars. He might know if one is available. I think that if you send an e-mail via the address at the warrguitars.com web site, that Jim will get it.

What are the down-sides to having a Steinberger headless design? Does it affect tone and sustain?
