subj says it all ;)
playing touchstyle on a 6 string, would like something besides my left index finger to mute the strings. cheap + simple = good.

I use a rectangle of felt folded over and tucked under the strings at the nut, when I bother to use a mute at all.

Guess what...
I actually use an old sock for my guitar. It's my budgetversion of a Batten-style damper. You could easely just move it over the sadle whenever you feel like using those open strings again. Works well for me. But I intend to find a better one soon. The possebility of being able to switch to open strings is vital to me though. I guess I'll be looking for those Batten-dampers.

interestingly enough, I've tried both these methods, and neither really work for me. I still get some muffled open string noise, and it raises my action to a non-touchable height.

During the brief period when I tapped on my 6-string, I used a strip of Rubbermaid(TM) kitchen drawer liner. It's what the dampers on Megatars are made of, also early Warrs used the same stuff. Very cheap, surprisingly effective. Comes in various colors.
