Hello all!

I've been playing traditional for over 15 years. My style is similar to other shredders; Paul Gilbert, Yngwie, etc. I recently started getting into tapping players such as Stanley and TJ Helmrich. I bought Stanley's video which has some good tips, but I'm still a little weak with my right hand technique (I'm right handed).

First, I'm looking to do something similar to TJ, though I would like to progress to Stanley's level. I play in a metal band and I don't want to retune and I don't want to mute the strings either. It's really for solo's and things, more single line stuff or harmonies, but not really chordal.

OK, my problem is with descending patterns with my right hand. Do you hammer each note, or do you pull off? I got so that I can sort of pull off, I realized that you actually have to pull up with the right hand fingers using the pull off method. I just can't seem to get it to flow though. If I hammer every note, I get a much clearer sound, but I still can't get much speed going. Ascending I'm doing all right, but if someone had some pointers for descending licks with your tapping hand, I would really appreciate it.

Do you hammer each note, or do you pull off?Depends, but if I had to choose just one, I'd pick pull offs. It's impossible to play legato otherwise. Also, if you don't use a damper, the open string is probably going to be heard in the middle when hammering.
I just can't seem to get it to flow though.Patience, grasshopper. As with all motor skills, it takes practice.
