Is it possible to find gauges lower than .008? I want to tune the first string up to Bb.

.007, try looking for Mandolin singles, I've never used them but used to stock them in a music store.

Mandolin strings might not be long enough. Also, it's a whole different thing to tune a mandolin string on a 15" scale mandolin than on a 34" scale tap guitar (the original post does not specify a scale, so I'm just guessing) - it'll have to withstand roughly 5 times as much tension.
jofranari, if you try a .007 let us know how it went.

alternatively if you need a bass string you can mail order a SIT .007 from conklin guitars:

Hey, they have #F strings 150 (and even #C 195!!). Exactly what i've been looking for! My lowest string is a #F, but its a 125 intended for H, and it's flopping.
But back to the question, i have seen extended range basses that tunes up to G and Ab, above the normal 009 d string, using 005 strings, so those strings ,ust exist somewhere. At least i know that a dude named Garry Goodman do it on his 12 string bass tuned in straith fourths (no overlap), from #C00 and up.
In the future i would love to have a 14 string M3 inverted, tuned from low-low #C up to G.
Take a look at this monster-bass: http://www.garrygoodman.com/what's_new!.htm

Our local guitar shop sells singles of D'addario strings, including 0.007's. You can always splice them to get a longer scale. Just call around to your local shops, maybe you can find one that carries them.
You can get singles of Ernie Ball strings from Musicans Friend, I think it is, but 0.008 is the finest you can get.

Hi,
At Clic Music we sell .007 strinngs at long scale lengths. So they fit any tap-guitar, including the middle strings.
As I play mirrored fourths, bass on the side, my treble strings are in the middle, where the length to the pegs is the longest.
I personally do not use anymore .007. even on our light gauge 'sweet fingers' set. They ara really too thin for my personal taste. The sound is small, and the have a tendency to break easily.
So I always use .008, which are of course a bit harder to pull...

I had a music teacher who had a 22 fret Telecaster. My point is: most Telcasters only have 21 frets.
I wonder if you have enough room for an additional fret. If it is done accurately, it might be better than expecting wire to be stretched so. Perhaps, if the tang were ground off a fret, it could be attached non-permanantly with a glue gun.]
[It's only fitting that the Telecaster was personaly signed by none other than--Les Paul?! : )
You could also bend the last note.
I had a friend who used to play high notes on the (flat) Emg neck pickup of her Steinberger.]

Hello,
I have .006 ,.005,.004.003 .002 even .001 plain steel strings.
I really push to use octave indicators for clarification,i.e. A4,E4.
My .005 tunes to Bb4 on the 25.5" guitar scale. It tunes to G4 at the 32" scale. These strings do not break easily.
It depends on what kind of tension you prefer on the string.
My super .007 strings will tune to Ab4 (415 Hz) at the. 30" scale. Al Caldwell uses them on his 11-string bass for Eb4 at 34".They do not break.
All .007 strings are not created equal.
Feel free to send me a pm for more info.

hello Garry, good to see you here :D
it would be interesting to see super .008s and .009s (and bigger?) too to enable higher tensions at these gauges

Hi Matt,
I have a super .009 and .010.The notes these strings are usually tuned to are either Bb4,B4, on the bass scale or Eb,E4 on the guitar scale. Most major brands seem to do okay with these pitches. The .009 should make E4 and even F4 at 34", and that is getting into some tension.
Send me a pm if you want to try them.

What about a .008 for a E4?

My .007's are very thick feeling strings and you would probably like them. They are not what you'd expect from an .007 in that they are not fragile. It depends on what scale length you want to use it on. As I have mentioned from time to time,Al Caldwell is using my .007 on his 34" scale 11-string bass tuned to Eb4, and the same string has been on the bass for 5 months. I believe it will tune as high as F4 at 34",if not higher.
I might be able to get an .008 made with the same quality as my .007 wire.I would suggest you try the .007 first.
