Hello
Could be time for new strings for my Megatar.
Any thoughts on strings? There are none in the eBay Megatar shop at the moment.
I am in the UK and can get single Rotosound strings online. But, can only get 28w for the melody, not 29w. Is me Buzz Feiten still going to work?
Anyone know of a good source for custom string sets in the UK?

Hi Jim, here is something I wrote about three years ago on the topic of string sources:

Hi RJ
Excellent - thanks for this. I had sourced what I thought was a full set for about £31 but I will try and see if I can find anything cheaper now.

Jim, did you find a UK source for strings? I've just received my eBay-bought Megatar & have already broken a string! I don't really want to wait for a set to come from the USA.

Hi AAT
I ended up buying a new set from Traktor via the Megatar eBay shop. Came to my house pretty quick. I have to say I have yet to restring the old boy though...I reckon that would be a whole afternoon's job and I'd rather just tap away!
I will say though if you are stuck and just want to tap and have bust a string, try Rotosound single strings. I broke my .009 string twice and found Rotosound strings to work okay.
If in doubt take your Meggy to a shop and see if the strings are long enough, otherwise, just take a measurement from bridge to the tuner in question and check the string length in the shop.

As of today, strings are available on the EBay Megatar Store (http://stores.ebay.com/megatarstore/), and you can always get Megatar strings by direct order, using either credit-card or paypal.
However, if you're ever stuck for a string, if you get the same gauge string from a guitar store, it will work OK. Don't get a different *kind* of string (like 'contact core' or flatwound), because that will mean your intonation will no longer be correct, so you only maintain the more 'in-tune' sound of the Buzz Feiten Intonation System we supply when you replace with identical gauge strings.
Bass strings will be long enough, but often guitar strings are not long enough.
However, you can cut a few inches off the old string and tie it onto the new string -- using a knot that's called a 'square knot' in the USA and a 'reef knot' in the UK -- and this will work. Generally the knot will fall between the nut and the tuner, and it makes the string long enough to attach to the tuner. It looks stupid, but it works fine.

PS: And for anybody who's curious about how to 'lock' a string, here's a video on the subject ---

Jim, thanks for the helpful advice. The friendliness of the tapping community has long encouraged me that I would be supported & encouraged, if I dared to take on this rather daunting instrument. Thank you for confirming my belief!
Traktor, I have always been impressed by the way you look after your customers, & how you enthusiastically support the tapping community in general. I remember being very excited when Mobius Megatar started up, because I liked your instruments & the open-minded approach you took to their design & use. Having followed you since the early days, it seems appropriate that my first tapping instrument is an early Maxtapper (Ser. No. 031 812, from June 2000). I've just ordered a couple of sets of strings, from your eBay shop.
