How tough is it to do your own setups on a Warr?

I recently had my Artist 10 set up by a local guy, and to get the strings intonated properly he had to bring most of the bridge saddles all the way forwards, so that they are fully extended from the bridge. Problem is, some of the strings still aren't _quite_ in tune, and the saddles can't move any more to get them all the way.

I did switch from a 4ths/5ths tuning to a 4ths/4ths tuning as well- don't know whether that would require a bridge adjustment (beyond saddle length).

Did my guy miss something about the setup process, or do I really need to move my entire bridge up to get the strings intonated?

Thanks!

1. First assure the action is low. Start by assuring that the gap between the string and fret 12 is no wider than the thickness of a U.S. dime. Then, using an electronic tuner, tap and hold on fret 2, and then on fret 14. Adjust the intonation so that the two notes are exactly one octave apart.

2. On a high-quality instrument like a Warr, you should be able to go lower than dime-height action on fret 12, if the neck is straight. If you lower the action even more, re-intonate the bridge as before.

I'm sure that there are better ways to do it, but this procedure will at least get you close.

Have you tried putting on new strings?

It's useless to judge the intonation of a touchstyle instrument
with old strings. The effect of worn strings is much more
significant on our instruments, than on normal bass or guitar.
