So I've started Traktor's layaway plan:D. I'm getting a Truetapper Storm with black tuning keys and knobs. I'm getting bass bottom tuning, but with the strings reversed. I figure I want an uncrossed tuning that I could still, hypothetically/theoretically transform into straight 4th's with a pitch shifter. And I figure that since I'm coming from guitar and my right hand is taking over the duties of my left hand, it made sense to flip it.
So my question is, does anyone know about the effects of putting flatwounds or groundwounds on a tapper with good magnetic pickups? flatwounds are supposed to deaden the tone (which is good for certain genres), but the guy at guitar center says he uses flatwounds on his bass, and that they're still good with hammer-ons (i.e. tapping:)).
What I'm saying is I really want to try flatwounds, but if there's too much of a tone compromise, I'll probably go with groundwounds, which are supposed to be brighter and close to the sound of roundwounds.
That is, I'll try different strings if they aren't ridiculously more expensive than roundwounds.
