How would you attach a string ?

Let's say you had to attach the non-ball end of a heavy string to a post. Would you simply try to tie some knot (may not be easy with heavy strings). Or would you somehow remove the coil part, and tie the knot with the thinner core part ?

And is there any trick to removing the outer coil ?
