View Full Version : All 4ths?

Recently I tuned my E and B strings up a half step to F and C to play around with having a guitar in all 4ths. The first thing I had to do was work out new open chord shapes. The open chord voicings have a noticeably different flavor to them now. Then the fun part was playing with the scale shapes. It felt a lot smoother being able to repeat the same shapes and patterns anywhere on the fretboard. I don't know if I'm going to keep it like this, but for now it's a lot of fun to play around with.
Has anybody else on here tried this?

I like to tune absolutly different. You can hear me playing DADADD here:

Michael Hedges used to compose every song in a different tuning. And yes, it's fun to play not knowing where the notes are.

Have fun!

I Have been playing in straight 4ths for two and a half years now.
Like you said, the paterns keep repeating themselves allover the fretboard making playing easier. (unless you are used to the regular guitar tuning)
Chords can be tricky, but with a little creativity nothing is impossible.
i'd say give it a try!
cheers,

You are right, Igos. Just use your intuitive thinking.
The first instrument I learned was a mandoline-like spanish instrument called Bandurria, tuned all fourths. But It is mainly a melodic instrument.
When I moved to guitar I knew EADGBE tuning, and I understood the adventages for playing simple chords. Tradition is a good reference point.
Now, I still play the guitar, and it doesn't matter the tuning you use once you have mastered the rudiments.
You need to know the rules before breaking them.

You can find information about Bandurria here (in english):
