Hello Tapping Gurus,

I was surfing around the web and came across one of Buster B's thumb picking videos, he mention that he undergone surgery, I also had an acquaintance that went to surgery because of perhaps too much guitar playing.

I was wondering since we are playing in an upright position, would we have less chance of ending in the same fate? or is there no escape :(

Thanks

I think when I get rich and famous I'll get surgery to attach a second right hand thumb, you know, for those really hard bass lines, and perhaps if that works out I'll get a few extra middle fingers for commuting.

My guess it that holding an instrument upright is better than bending your wrist to tap a guitar in the normal position. Pay attention to your arm and wrist positions, they should be comfortable and not bent more than necessary. In the past I have had a touch of carpal tunnel, and now a touch of arthritis, so I am trying to be careful.

Last year I had trouble playing the Stick standing up, my thumb kept getting stuck between the fretboard and an area under my ribcage. I thought I was just gaining weight but it turns out I had a massive 20 cm tumor on my liver (benign fortunately). But once they removed that, half my liver and gallbladder, my thumb has plenty of room now! Fastest weight loss program I've ever tried.

Don't know if I've mentioned it before, but there's also an interesting article on this subject here:
