Polycarbonate stick

I am in the process of buying my first stick, and was wondering about the polycarbonate sticks that were built in the 80's. How do they sound in comparison to a wood one? I also saw an article about them, and in it it was mentioned they use stainless frets? Was that all of them, or was it an option?
