Top 10 Pivotal Musical Moments
Yeah - idea ripped from s'wire - liked the thought though - ordered by influence not date.
1. Oxford, MS 1989 - Standing 10 feet away from David Schools (Widespread Panic) and watching him play "Stop and Go". Blew me back to the woodshed for 6 months until I could play every line on "Space Wrangler".
2. Memphis, TN 1990 - Bought a tape by some obscure band called Primus after reading a Bass Player sidebar. Funny how "Too Many Puppies" applies to today's international circumstances.
3. Memphis, TN - 1988 - Heard fIREHOSE's "if'n. Back to the woodshed. "From One Cums One" still kicks butt to this day.
4. New Orleans 4/1/1991 - Sitting at the bar at Tipitina's listening to Mike Watt talk about the Flying the Flannel and D. Boon while chowing Red Beans. Stood my ground against/between the stage and the moshers. Learned what the difference between a working band and a rock band were.
5. New Orleans, LA 1995 - King Crimson @ House of Blues. Stood my ground to stay about 5 rows back. Tony, Trey.oh and those other guys.
6. New Orleans, LA 1994 - Watched the "Secret World Live" video. "Solsbury Hill" where Tony does that awesome run on the Stick.
7. Memphis, TN - 1985 - Bought Talas' "Live Speed on Ice" - started tapping on bass.
8. Bowling Green, KY 1982 - Heard Rush's "Moving Pictures" and "Permanent Waves" - decided I MUST learn how to play something (drums mom, PLEEEEASE!!!) -
9. Memphis, TN 1986 - Given a copy of Weather Report's "Heavy Weather" and Paul Simon's "Graceland" by my drummer uncle. . Stopped bothering to 'practice' rock songs and started focusing on 70's jazz fusion - this moment led to my subsequent discovery of Stanley Clarke and Return to Forever.
10. Memphis, TN 1979 - Dad bought me a copy of Kiss' "Destroyer" and "Dynasty" - took me to see Kiss on the Dynasty tour (I was 7!) - Warped ever since.
Okay, post yours!
