spacing for strings

what's the the norm for string spacing? thinking of going with 3/8 for bass & 5/16 for melody does that sound about right or am i off balance?

These spacings are within the range of what you can find in commercial tapping instruments. Such decisions are usually dictated, however, by what kind of bridge and pickup design you have. Many homebuilders use off-the-shelf guitar bridge parts, which usually have a 0.40" spacing.
