View Full Version : Using a PC as a gig/studio equipment

The "which kind of amp for my tapper" issue still troubles me, for various reasons:
1) I wouldn't dare plug the bass side of my tapper into my Fender Hot Rod Deville (2x12' horns), for fear of damage
2) I don't want to sell it to buy a keyboard amp because I still play the guitar and I love its sound
3) I don't want to buy an additional bass amp (I've got no room at home and anyway I dread the idea of doing gigs and having to lug TWO amps)

Therefore, I have an idea:
why not using my PC laptop, with an audio editing software that features amp emulation plugins (Cubase with Amplitube or the wonderful SimulAnalog, for example), as my all-in-one solution? It would allow me:
1) to bring some quite lightweight equipment around and plug it into the mixer at gigs
2) to record!
3) to get a decent sound even when playing through headphones

Does anyone know if it's a viable solution?
I mean, once the inevitable latency issues are sorted out, are there other difficult-to-foresee problems (a friend of mine told me that, in very loud gigs, the vibrations can have a negative impact on hard disks, resulting in an emergency shutdown)?

Of course, if it's feasible, then the question is:
1) Which firewire soundcard (I only need to record 2 tracks at once, no more)?
2) Which DI, considering I don't like the idea of gear that "colors" the sound when recording (I'm a fan of reamping, myself)?
