If you like prog and your Labor Day weekend isn't already planned, consider heading to Chapel Hill, NC to see Advent play at the longest running progressive music festival in the US.

I have read the terms "prog" and "prog rock" a lot since venturing into tapping circles. Will someone please explain to a geezer the most important feature that differentiates "prog rock" music from other forms.
P.S. I've never heard a King Crimson song, to my knowlege.

Well even on progressive rock forums people argue about "what is prog?" but basically I'd say it's rock music that stretches beyond traditional conventions, perhaps a more "artistic" approach to rock. So you might have longer pieces that extend beyond the verse/chorus/verse/chorus structure, more sophisticated arrangements, complex time signatures and harmonies, etc. often borrowing from classical and jazz forms.
Some recommendations for someone new:
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
Genesis - Foxtrot or the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Rush - Hemispheres
Emerson Lake and Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery
Yes - Relayer
King Crimson - The Power to Believe (since I think it incorporates elements from all the various eras of the band)
Gentle Giant - Playing the Fool
Of course "prog" these days often just means bands that sound like the original prog bands of the 70s listed above, so in a sense they aren't really "progressive" :)
I'll also add that Advent is quite an excellent band, I recommend their recent album Cantus Firmus.

some more recent prog bands to check out are
3 (who will be at Prog-day) (http://www.myspace.com/3)
Coheed and Cambria (http://www.myspace.com/coheedandcambria)
and The Mars Volta (http://www.myspace.com/themarsvolta)
The Mars Volta are really hit or miss though, some of there stuff is genius, and just as much is garbage. over them, i would recomend their older band At the Drive-In (http://www.myspace.com/atdi)

imho it's pretty easy ...
The first mars volta record (produced by rick rubin) is great!!! The second and the third (produced by themselves) aren't.
Nevertheless, if they are playing near your location -> go there!!! Truly amazing live band!!!
