Hey, any 8-string tappers out here? I'd be interested in hearing from folks and your various instruments, particularly re: transitioning from a 4 or 5 string bass to an 8 string tapping axe-guitar-NS/Stick....

Hi, I am an 8 string Warr guitar player in Australia. I come from a 6 string guitar background.

I was visiting earlier today over at Emmett Chapman's, and got to play around with some of his Sticks, namely the StickBass and the NS/Stick.....leaning very heavily towards the NS/Stick and it's multi-modal capabilities...plucking, picking, strumming, tapping.

The StickBass is a tapping dedicated instrument, it did feel really good though. I currently have a 10-string Chapman Stick, Padauk, standard tuning, light gauge strings.

I have to say that a big attraction of the NS/Stick and the Warr-8 is being able to easily adjust the playing position between horizontal and vertical. I play my Warr 8-string slightly north of horizontal (between 2 and 3 o'clock) but will shift it between 12 and 1 depending on what I am practicing.

It's cool that you are close enough to try them out.

How did the two compare in sound?

Being primarily a bassist (with a 7-string bass), the 8-string Warr really suits me. I'm not very good at using it polyphonically though. I'm mainly good at tapping single lines using both hands. Although the lines do have some polyphony built into them. It's not like having independant voices though.

Here's my Warr 8-string:

I also have a 12-string Warr configured in uncrossed fourths like a Phalanx. I haven't been playing it much though.

Wow, the wood on the Warr 8-string is beautiful!
What's the wood on it?

Manny, that's a prime example of zebrawood.

A small bit of wood trivia here: unlike most figured woods, the striking stripe pattern of zebrawood only shows if the wood is quartersawn, not flatsawn.

I've recently switched from a 12 string tuned in 5th's/5th's to an 8 string tuned in 5ths.
I'm loving it. I've got the top 6 strings midi'd, but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I did enjoy my 12 string, and at some point i'd probably get another one, but the 8 string is the right guitar for me now.
In case anyone doesn't know about it, Kuno Wagner has an excellent page for Crafty tuned 8 strings. Lot's of great exercises and music to learn.
