Inspired completely by Brett Bottomley from CT. during the NYC Stick Seminar this past April, I went out and got me a little pedal.
The Boost R.V.B.
Brett has the sweetest reverb tone I've ever heard on a Stick, and he's playing jazz, so it really has a great tone to it. I have to admit – I’m not a pedal guy. Haven’t been for a while. My feet are really big, so I just gave up trying the small pedal and went for the more elaborate VG-8 kind of stuff. But I recently heard this pedal in a store and loved what it did – give you killer reverb with a boost (should you decide you need one).
We all know that I am fan of Tech 21 products. They seem to think in a modular fashion for some future products they don’t even know are coming. For instance, I use their Trademark 60 amplifier with their Power Engine 60 powered speaker. Great clean sound. The cool thing about this amp, is that you can turn the effects loop on and off with their handy footswitch with three selections. You can also use the Boost section with the built in amp reverb to give your solos a different contour that will make them stand out more as well. But when you add their Boost Reverb to the effects loop section – WHOA!!!!! You now have something in the area of 6 different sounds coming from this setup!
-- Clean
-- Clean with Boost and amp reverb
-- Clean with Boost, amp reverb, and Boost Reverb set to a funny fluttery kind of way
-- Drive Channel
-- Drive Channel with Boost and amp reverb
-- Drive Channel with Boost and amp reverb, Boost Reverb set to a funny fluttery kind of way, and even a longer dreamy reverby stadium type of thang. Two different reverbs for smokin’ soloing.
Six different amp sounds for your touchstyle guitar (melody side most likely). Good stuff. You noticed that I said I put the pedal in their effects loop – yup! The manual suggests this, so I trusted them! And they are right (they made the products didn’t they?). The absolute clean sound of this pedal is great. The additional Boost on the pedal just adds that gnarly boost to your sound that you didn't know existed, or that you never knew you needed. Super killer. Because of the option to turn the effects loop on and off from the amp’s footswitch, you can essentially keep the Boost R.V.B. in the back of your amp. You can have a BIG SECRET SOUND that no one can guess at! But you will of course want to show off your sexy new black and gold stomp box – I know I did, and my friends are a little afraid of my shimmering new sound.
So what else is there to say? Go get one. Even if you were to get the little Trademark 30 amp – you’ll be getting the biggest sound out of it with this wonderful little toy. Another useful application for this pedal is to use it for acoustic guitar amps that have a separate channel for a mic input. This is cool. Most of these amps have a reverb section that tailors the sound for the entire amp, and some even have a balance control to distribute the reverb between the vocal and guitar channels. If you use the Boost R.V.B. for the guitar side (in line like a regular floor pedal), you give your guitar it’s own reverb character completely separate from the amp’s signal. Very sexy indeed.
For 8 stringers who do not played crossed and just go for one big sound - this may be a great addition. I like using it on my Bi-Melody Megatars.
Just sharing a bit of personal happiness. I've had my pedal for about two and a half months now. Digging it for life. You can read about it Here (http://www.tech21nyc.com/boostrvb.html) :
That is all!!
