Folks,
My good friend Chris Hewitt is seriously ill with cancer. As an honor to him and his wonderful musical compositions, I have posted some archival video from our band Intuition, which played about the Colorado area in the early 1980s.
I learned so much from Chris about hand independance, composition, playing with passion, and life in general.
There will be a benefit in Denver next Thursday, June 6th, to honor Chris, and help with medical expenses.
If you live in the area, I humbly ask that you go and learn about this incredible man, who is like a brother to me. I will put the info below.
Please enjoy this wonderful piece of music. Be patient, it really gets going after a while!

“The Chris Hewitt Celebration” is a fundraiser, featuring Laura Newman and AOA, to help with treatment and care for a GIANT in the Colorado music community who is grappling with aggressive cancer.
“The Chris Hewitt Celebration” will be on June 6, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at the Mercury Café, 2199 California Street. This is a benefit to help raise money for critical treatment and care as Chris and his family face the realities associated with a debilitating illness. The evening will also be an opportunity for fellow musicians and fans to honor Chris’ talent and contribution as a nationally recognized Colorado musician, promoter, and composer. The evening will feature short performances by Ron Miles, Denver’ Gamelan Orchestra – Tunas Mekar, Janet Feder, Colin Bricker, and Super Secret Messengers, followed by featured artists Laura Newman and AOA.
Many Denver music fans recognize Chris from his bombastic keyboard playing in the popular band AOA, with saxophonist Laura Newman. Before AOA, Chris paved the way for an array of musicians and composers, as the Artistic Director of the Colorado New Music Association. While continuing to perform to audiences himself, he brought heavies like Anthony Braxton to the area through his Jazz Beyond series, which later became Colorado Music Works. Chris also formed “The Collective,” a team of composers, musicians, and post-production engineers who deliver award winning musical landscapes for television, film, and multi-media productions.
There are countless Colorado musicians who have played with Chris over the years, and even more, who aspired to share the stage with him. “The Chris Hewitt Celebration” will be an opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate the gift of music that Chris has so passionately supported and nurtured in this area for years. The Boulder Camera wrote, “Hewitt’s music does not permit passive neutrality.” This statement holds true to not only his music, but also how he approaches everything life offers.
The suggested minimum donation is $10.00 at the door, and donated items for the silent auction are encouraged and can be brought to the Mercury Cafe the day of the event at 6:30 p.m. Questions regarding the silent auction, as well as alternative donations to Chris and his family can be directed to Richard O’Dell, at 303-744-6357 or rich@richodell.com.
