View Full Version : High E String Problem

The problem with my E string is that it seems to lack tension. Whenever I tap on it, it seems to go off of the fretboard. The same happens when I am tapping "Van-halen style." It's quite annoying/
I am a bit lazy to research about this. What can I do to increase the tension? I can adjust the action for one thing. However, I am trying to avoid that since I need to maintain a low action.

Are you tapping on a guitar, adrain? I don't know what gauges you use, but maybe try a heavier one?

I am tapping on a tuba. lol Just kidding.
Yes. I am tapping on a guitar. It's a regular 6-string Silvertone strat-like guitar.
I guess the answer to this question is obvious. I need a heavier string gauge.
Thanks GaryOpenhill.

I don't know if thats the solution, but maybe its worth a try. If you have a guitar scale length, a 009 or 010 string or something, and a flat neck and low action, i guess it should work. I don't know what you mean by having the string "go off of the fretboard".

You could also be inadvertently applying too much lateral pressure on the string by tapping at an angle (pushing it off the fretboard), watch to see how your fingertip strikes the string, maybe it would help to concentrate on tapping straight down on it?
