Take a look at tapper jean baudins new conklin bass. It's not ugly: http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=13522698&blogID=148610364&MyToken=cd706caa-b613-4d34-a087-40299480f4c9

It has a "melted fretboard".
I have no idea what that means, but i want one.

The workmanship is breathtaking. I can't find another adjective.

Which gets me wondering....can an instrument be TOO good? If a musical instrument is a museum-grade sculpture also....dare one take it on the road? Instruments are made to be played, and eventually that means scratches and dings. I would be afraid to actually USE such a magnificent piece of woodwork.

I could not find any mention of the 11 String Bass on Conklin's web site, but the 9 String is $5800!!!!

Personally, I would rather have 3 Megatars for that price, in case two of them got lost or stolen........

Could you imagine flying somewhere with this one? I would be frantic wondering how the gorillas (baggage handlers) were tossing my "baby" around.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. A song from "Fiddler on the Roof" comes to mind: If I Were a Rich Man. :)

Or you could get a second one, and ship it to the gig ahead of time.

The guitar can go first-class. I'll stow away among the baggage. :p
