I suppose this could have gone under the topic of "bazaar", but there is an interesting home-made unit on ebay:

What an interesting idea.
Actually, I can see how he solved one problem that's been plaguing me on the design.

Oh, yes. Tuners behind the bridge works when they are put in like this. Good idea. How come he only did it for five of the strings?

Hi Gary,
Take a look at pic #12 on eBay. The tuners for all 10 strings are behind the bridge. It looks like he may have used different tuners for the bass and melody sets.

Sure, Ray, i agree. But if i observe correctly five of the tuners are instertet from underneath the instrument, with the tunerheads sticking out on the side, and the other five are insterted from the side, with the tuners sticking up. I think, the last option is a great solution, giving that it is so easy to accidently touch the tuners an detune the string the other way.

I really wish that sound samples of the instrument were available. I have, for some time, been considering that specific type of DiMarzio pickup for my next instrument project.

I've spoken to this guy in the past. This prototype uses 10 standard Gotoh tuners. He's just mounted the bass side tuners differently so he can get to them from the playing position.
He seem to have withdrawn this from ebay...
